What is the UK ETA?
An electronic travel authorisation (ETA) is digital permission to travel to the UK. It isn’t a visa. It’s linked to your passport, and you need it before you travel for tourism, visiting family and friends, short business trips and some other short stays.
Who needs one
- Most visitors who don’t need a visa for short stays, including citizens of the USA, Canada, Australia and European countries.
- Everyone travelling needs their own ETA, including babies and children.
You don’t need one if you have a British or Irish passport, or if you already have permission to live, work or study in the UK. Some passengers transiting airside may also be exempt; check GOV.UK for the current rules.
Cost and how long it lasts
- The fee is £20 per person, which rose during 2026.
- An ETA lets you visit the UK many times for up to 6 months per visit while it is valid. It usually lasts 2 years, or until your passport expires if that is sooner.
- If you get a new passport, you need a new ETA.
How to apply
- Apply through the official UK ETA app or on GOV.UK.
- Have your passport ready, plus an email address and a way to pay.
- You will be asked for a photo and to answer some questions.
- Most decisions are made within a few working days, so apply well before you fly.
Watch out for copycat sites. Some websites charge much more than the official fee for the same ETA. Only apply through GOV.UK or the official app.
