How last-minute deals work
Travel companies want to fill seats and rooms that haven’t sold. As departure gets closer, some lower prices to attract flexible travellers. That’s where last-minute deals come from.
It isn’t guaranteed, though. Popular dates and destinations often get more expensive close to departure as availability runs out. Late deals reward flexibility on where and when, not just how late you book.
When to look
- Off-peak periods usually have the most late availability.
- School holidays and major events rarely have bargains at the last minute. Book these early.
- Midweek departures are often cheaper than weekend ones.
Checklist before you book at short notice
- Check your passport is valid for the destination. Some countries need several months left on it.
- Check entry requirements such as visas or electronic travel authorisations (for example, the ESTA for the US). Some take time to approve.
- Arrange travel insurance as soon as you book.
- Check luggage allowances, transfer times and check-in rules.
- Read the cancellation terms. Late bookings are often non-refundable.
Search smart for late deals
Start with your travel dates and budget rather than a fixed destination, then compare what’s available. Package holidays often have the strongest late offers, because operators can discount flights and hotels together. Booking separately via cheap flights and hotel deals gives you more control.
