Compare the total price, not the headline rate

Hotel prices can look very different depending on whether taxes and fees are included. In the US, many hotels add a resort or destination fee on top of the room rate. In many European cities, a local tourist or city tax is charged per person per night, often paid at the hotel. Always compare the final price for your stay.

Refundable or non-refundable?

Non-refundable rates are usually cheaper, but you lose the money if your plans change. Flexible rates cost more but let you cancel, often up to a day or two before arrival. If there’s any chance your plans might change, the flexible rate can be the better deal.

Choose the right area

A cheaper hotel far from where you want to be can cost more in time and transport. Check how close it is to public transport, the sights you want to see or the beach, and read recent reviews about the neighbourhood.

Hotel, apartment or resort?

  • Hotels suit short stays and city breaks.
  • Apartments give families and longer stays more space and a kitchen.
  • Resorts keep everything on site. See all-inclusive holidays.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the same hotel cost different amounts on different sites?
Booking sites can have different rates, room types, promotions and cancellation terms. Compare the same room, dates and conditions to see the real difference.
What is a resort fee?
A mandatory daily charge some hotels add, common in the US, often covering things like Wi-Fi or pool access. It may not be in the headline rate, so check the final price.
Is it cheaper to book a hotel with a flight?
Sometimes. Package deals can bundle discounts, and booking them together may add financial protection. Compare both ways for your dates.
